Some notes 4 Giselle as performed be the Greek National Opera Ballet

Δυστυχώς για μία ακόμη φορά παρακολουθήσαμε μία παράσταση τσουπωτών μπαλαρίνων, γυναικών και αντρών, χαριτωμένων μεν δεξιοτεχνών δεν. Τι γίνεται με αυτούς τους χορευτές της Λυρικής που δεν μπορούν να ολοκληρώσουν ένα άλμα ή ένα φουετέ χωρίς να χάσουν την ισορροπία τους; Γιατί δεν χάνουν κάνα κιλό; Γιατί δεν είναι πιο γυμνασμένοι-γραμμωμένοι; Στο «So You Think You Can Dance» είδαμε πολλά ταλέντα που προερχόντουσαν από κλασικό μπαλέτο, γιατί δεν μπορούν να μπουν στη Λυρική; Πρέπει να κάνουν προκοιλάκια και προγουλάκια για να τα καταφέρουν;

Unfortunately, we watched once more a performance of chubby ballet dancers, males and females, cute to say but not artistic enough though. What’s the story with those National Opera ballet dancers who cannot seem able to conclude a fouette or a jete without losing their balance? Why don’t they go on a diet? Why aren’t they more trained or have better bodies? When “So You Think You Can Dance” aired we saw lots of talents coming from classical ballet, why can’t they become part of the National Opera Ballet? Are they supposed to grow bellies and gills in order to make it?

In terms of everything else, the music was flawless, thank god at the National Opera we can still listen to orchestra-live music accompanying ballet performances. The sets and the costumes were beautiful, highlighting the theatrical aspect of the performance. The theatre was filled with people clapping their hands at every chance (not so many to actually deserve it). But the key element, the essence of the performance, the ballet dancers themselves looked like old veterans trying to rekindle a passion that was never there to begin with. Giselle – Natassa Siouta at least, the leading lady of the evening, even though she didn’t bewitch us with her artistic excellence or agility, featured a really emotional approach to her role and performed the shy peasant girl with more than enough sensitivity and expressiveness. To sum up, the ballet future of our National Opera seems highly unpromising, let’s hope that its new director, Irek Mukhamedov, will shortly see to renewing the dancing staff or it’s heading to become the first dancing club for the elderly.
